In my experience of working with triathletes, the majority choose to eat porridge for breakfast.
The question is whether there is a better option?
My opinion is there is and that option is eggs.
Most people are afraid of eating too many eggs, generally because they are under the impression that they will raise their cholesterol.
So are eggs bad for you?
In a word, No!
If you need some convincing then please read on.
Eggs are ridiculously nutritious, so much so that they are often termed “nature’s multivitamin.”
Unfortunately, eggs have been demonized in the past because they contain a large amount of cholesterol, which was believed to increase the risk of heart disease.
But the truth is that despite being high in cholesterol, eggs don’t really raise the LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood. In fact, eggs primarily raise the HDL (good) cholesterol.
Despite all the warnings about eggs in the past few decades, studies show that they are NOT associated with heart disease.
If anything, eggs are pretty much a perfect food for humans. They’re loaded with protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and unique antioxidants that protect the eyes.
They are also an excellent source of Choline, a nutrient that is very important for the health of the brain and about 90% of people aren’t getting enough of.
Despite being a “high fat” food, eating eggs for breakfast is proven to cause significant weight loss compared to a breakfast of a carbohydrate dominant nature.
The other great thing about eggs is that they are so versatile. You can scramble, poach, fry, make an omelette and boil.
That means if you eat a couple for breakfast each day, you can mix up what you do with them and keep them interesting.
Incorporating eggs is in my opinion is a great way to improve body composition, health and hence ride and run quicker.
Just be sure to go free range and ideally organic.
