So this is topical for me this week – yesterday I woke up with a raging cold.
I hate getting ill, mainly because it effects my training and I know that I have to step back and just get better. You will KNOW that’s not easy when you’re on a mission to get faster.
Its frustrating, especially when I want that half marathon PB in January.
I haven’t actually been ill for well over a year, which for someone who used to get a cold 5/6 times a year is almost miraculous.
I put it down to having my nutrition right, MOST of the time……..
I’ve just moved house, been really busy and to be honest my nutrition hasn’t been as good as it should have been. Partly because we’ve been living in chaos – so being organised with food has taken a back seat.
So what to do to stop getting sick – here are my top tips:
The first thing is to make sure you are not deficient in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fatty acids.
If you are you will get sick more often and if you don’t eat right when you are sick then you wont get better as quickly – simple as that.
Pre and Probiotics are really important for preventing illness as well, mainly because they govern the health of our gut and a healthy gut improves our immune system.
Good sources of prebiotics are :
- Surprise surprise – vegetables.
- beans, oats, quinoa and sweet potatoes
- Berries, kiwis, apples and bannanas
- Flax and chia seeds
Aim for 2-3 servings of each of the above daily to fight off the plague or in my case man flu.
Until next time,
