I don’t think that there is one single endurance athlete alive who wouldn’t like to get some extra energy for free.
Feeling tired is unfortunately one of the challenges of this sport but there are some significant lifestyle factors which can make this better, or worse.
I will tell you some common mistakes which will leave the answers blatantly obvious.
Number 1:
Train hard during the week with restricted calories – This always starts on a Monday with good intentions.
Number 2:
This causes number 1 – Weekend binges on food and alcohol. This can sometimes accompany training and can worse still be on days where you do nothing.
Number 3:
Messing about on your phone instead of getting proper rest and sleep – “My name is Jamie and I am a phoneaholic”
Number 4:
Trying to go low carb – Reducing carbs reduces calories, unless you get them from somewhere else, i.e – fats/protein. So if you reduce carbs, make sure you eat more of the other, otherwise you will be surviving on fresh air.
Number 5:
Never taking a complete break from training – The fear is that your fitness will deteriorate forever. the fact is that unless you allow your body to fully recover once in a while, you can become chronically stressed and this leads to NO more performance gains. I know, I’ve done this and it is NOT good at all.
These are common themes I see with my clients.
Spotting them is easy.
Fixing them is hard.
Thats what coaching is – Not just saying do this and do that but supporting people when they need help.
Giving a gentle push in the right direction.
Being a voice of reason.
Sometimes saying STOP!
When we rely just on our own advice, we so often get it wrong, especially if you are one of those types of people!!
I am and thats why I know.
You’re reading this so you are probably too.
