Here is one of the most popular scenarios I come across:
- I need to lose some weight
- I will reduce what I eat
- I will train more
- I lose a bit of weight
- I stop losing weight
- I will reduce what I eat
- I will train more
This cycle goes on…….
It goes on until it cannot go on anymore.
Unfortunately that doesn’t mean the person reaches their goal weight, it means the person blows up.
They run out of energy.
This is often manifested in illness, or they just give up.
Whichever it is, it is as a result of hitting it too hard.
It is a paradox that this attitude which can make a good athlete, is also the thing stopping your fat loss journey.
You see, the problem is that this impatience leads to an extreme approach – Increased energy expenditure and reduced calorie intake.
As an athlete when you are trying to perform well and remember thats your primary goal, your performance will likely suffer if you follow the above system.
So what the answer?
Firstly I think we need to lower our expectations.
Being surrounded by images of beauty and athletic perfection doesn’t help with this – They make us think thats’s what we can achieve and hence if we don’t, we’ve failed.
Progress is progress and is something to be celebrated – Not with cake though!
Imagine if you lost 0.5 kg every week for a year – It may seem like nothing in the short term but over the year……….
Do the Maths.
So, if it’s not working at the moment for you – don’t get too extreme.
Make sure you’re eating whole foods – When that stops working you will need to adjust your calories but softly softly is the key.
