Some people are fortunate, they carry their fat in a nice even way.
Spread across their arms, legs and body and as a result they do NOT ever look that fat.
Me on the other hand…….
Well, in the past if I put weight on, it all went on my belly and that not only looks unsightly but it is the worst place to carry it from a health point of view.
Why then do some people get fat around the middle?
There are usually two reasons.
One is calories may well be too high.
The second is that hormonally we may be out of sink.
If you add these both together you have even more trouble.
To explain:
Too many fluctuations in blood sugar and too much stress equal more belly fat.
The fluctuations in blood sugar come from diet and can easily be rectified with a decent plan.
The stress can be anything from too much training, not enough sleep, lack of time for yourself, busy at work OR:
A combination of all of the above.
This is a classic triathletes problem – a busy person who is constantly trying to fit more into their life, keeping everyone happy, except themselves and more importantly, their fat belly!!
So what to do?
Firstly – Get control of those blood sugars. Lots of meat, fish, veggies and good carbs. Get rid of gels, sugary drinks, bad carbs etc or at least eat them at the right time.
Secondly – Look at your training plan and make sure every session you do is for a reason.
That means there has to be a purpose behind each session – if their isn’t, then you probably don’t need to do it and will be better resting.
Have you ever heard that:
“Sometimes the best training session is the one you didn’t do?”
Then, really it is about taking some steps to be more in control in your life.
That can simply be allowing yourself 5 minutes a day of absolute quiet.
No phone, no music, no reading, no nothing.
Just you, at peace.
I find the car is a great place for this – I personally shut my eyes and just count my breaths – I always feel better afterwards.
There are lots of ways to do this though.
Next week I am going to delve into this in much more detail in my private coaching group – The Total Triathlete:
Alongside that, it is a chance for you to have me personally review your nutrition.
Post it on the page and let me tell you where you are going wrong.
It might be that getting those blood sugars in control is all you need.
