This story began, when Ceri decided at 42 she wanted to get in the best shape of her life.
She had never been really fit but after having her son, wanted to do something for her.
Her ultimate aim was to do the Ironman but she was a rubbish swimmer.
She also knew she wasn’t an athlete – she was a podgy, getting on for middle aged woman.
Like us all she bought a bike, got a garmin and some new trainers and off she went.
She bought a training plan off Training Peaks and did the odd session with her local Tri Club.
She was getting better and did her first event, a pool based sprint – she didn’t drown!
Ceri enjoyed it but knew it would be a big step up to Ironman.
She decided on a 70.3 open water to start her off.
She got a coach and her performance was improving, especially in the pool.
Then I got a message from Ceri:
“Why am I not losing weight when I train so much”
As usual, I looked at her current diet and there were some obvious mistakes.
Below is exactly one of the days she sent me from her food diary:
B – Porridge, protein shake, banana
S – Protein bar
L – Sandwich with ham, cheese, crisps, chocolate bar (kit kat), apple
D – Tuna pasta bake and yogurt
At 72KG Ceri needed roughly 2500 calories to survive – this came in at – 1950
What was wrong with it, what was wrong with her?
The context here is not just the calories, or lack of but also the fact she was training 8-10 times a week, which in the normal world is a A LOT!
So she wasn’t getting enough calories.
She wasn’t getting enough protein.
She wasn’t getting enough micro nutrients – veg and fruit
She wasn’t fuelling her training and
She wasn’t recovering
Basically she want eating right!
Hence she didn’t lose weight and didn’t feel, or look like an athlete.
As a one to one client, we fixed this in 4 months – using simple, useable strategies and foods
